Beloved local retailer Chico’s has made a triumphant return to Sanibel Island. The original Chico’s store, a cherished landmark for loyal fans across the country, reopened its doors on Periwinkle Place on Thursday, January 11th, following a meticulous rebuilding effort.
For four decades, Chico’s has been a cherished fixture in Southwest Florida. The reopening marks a significant milestone in the community’s recovery from the devastation of Hurricane Ian in September 2022. The storm caused extensive damage to the store, but Chico’s never lost sight of its commitment to Southwest Florida.

Hurricane Ian wreaked havoc, impacting over 1,400 Chico’s associates and countless community members. In response, Chico’s swiftly mobilized recovery efforts, offering support through various channels. The company established an Employee Disaster Relief Fund to support associates with personal expenses and temporary living expenses, offered mental health resources, and partnered with the Red Cross to raise vital funds.
“As devastating as the storm was, it gave us an opportunity to show up for each other in a meaningful way,” shared Leana Less, SVP Marketing at Chico’s. “We are incredibly proud of the resilience of our customers, employees, and the entire Sanibel community.”
While the original store sustained significant damage, it also presented an opportunity for a fresh start. The newly renovated space boasts a modern coastal aesthetic, featuring an open floor plan, warm oak fixtures, and custom-colored walls. The expanded fitting area offers an intimate and elevated shopping experience, complete with luxurious touches like framed artwork and three-way mirrors.
A Celebration of History: The new store design pays homage to Chico’s rich history. Heritage furniture from the original location, including a chair handcrafted by founder Marvin Gralnick, is proudly displayed alongside iconic fashion styles. Visitors will encounter brand milestones displayed throughout the store, including the original sign salvaged from the wreckage of Hurricane Ian which now holds a place of honor at the top of the grand staircase. The staircase itself is lined with painted white millwork that serves as a gallery wall to display pieces of art, brand memories and artifacts. The second floor features an intimate Soma shop-in-shop with a dedicated fitting area.
To commemorate the reopening, a new plaque/sign will be unveiled, commemorating the Sanibel store as the very first Chico’s store, established in 1983. Additionally, Chico’s continues its commitment to disaster relief support by donating proceeds from the sale of exclusive Chico’s Sanibel t-shirts to the American Red Cross.Ten dollars from every purchase will benefit the American Red Cross.
With its warm, welcoming atmosphere and commitment to the community, the Sanibel Chico’s store a must-visit for locals and tourists alike. Whether you’re a longtime Chico’s fan or simply looking for a unique shopping experience, the newly reopened Sanibel store is sure to impress.
