Hurricane Ian peaked as a Category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 160 mph early on September 28, while progressing towards the west coast of Florida, and made landfall just below peak intensity in Southwest Florida. This powerful storm left a profound and enduring mark on Sanibel, Captiva, Fort Myers, Pine Island and all of the surrounding areas. Hurricane Ian’s damaging winds and unforgiving storm surge ravaged our communities, demolished homes + businesses, left countless lives turned upside down, and tested the spirit of our community. But from the chaos, and through the continuing recovery process, stories of resilience, unity, and unwavering hope have emerged.

Sanibel Art Colony (SAC) is inviting artists to submit images (or videos*) of artwork in all mediums:

  • depicting hope for the future of Sanibel Island and SWFL
  • expressing the artist’s feeling and/or experiences before/during/after the hurricane
  • showing changes in landscapes/landmarks/wildlife due to Hurricane Ian
  • incorporating found materials collected after Hurricane Ian
  • influenced by the hurricane recovery/rebuild process

This is a digital-only exhibition that will be posted on the newly launching SanibelArtColony.com website and widely promoted online through Sanibel Barometer, Sanibel Art Colony, and other Barometer Media platforms.
