Photo Gallery: Sanibel-Captiva Art League Annual Art Fair

by Eric J. Taubert

The vibrant colors of Sanibel and Captiva were on glorious display this weekend on canvases of all sizes – and everyone was invited to see them!

On Sunday, February 23rd, 2020 The Sanibel-Captiva Art League hosted their 18th Annual Art Fair on another perfect Florida day at the Sanibel Community House on Periwinkle Way.

Thirty Sanibel-Captiva Art League artists participated, showing only original work (for sale) in various mediums from water color, to oils, pastels, acrylics and through to mixed medium.

Many of the artists represented in this event are plein air painters who are often seen around the island painting on Thursday mornings.

About Sanibel-Captiva Art League

Early Years
In 1964 a small group of island artists joined together to form the Sanibel-Captiva Art League with the purpose to further interest in art on the islands, to promote shows and exhibits and to organize classes for beginners and advanced students.  The early members were also instrumental in exchanging ideas in the field of art between the islands and nearby communities and joined the Art Council of SW Florida.  The public, including visitors and residents, interested in art have always been welcomed to all events. Programs continue to be free or at minimum cost to cover expenses of a visiting instructor.

During the early years there were group exhibits during the Shell Fair in the Sanibel Community House, local craft shows, the Casa Ybel Auditorium, Tahitian Gardens, Sanibel Public Library, Captiva Memorial Library, the Captiva Post Office, Captiva Civic Association as well as several other island and off-island locations.

Activities
Special painting demonstrations and critiques are featured at our monthly meetings at the Sanibel Community House.  The meetings have always presented a variety of programs of interest to member artists wishing to advance their skills as well as to the public seeking more education in the visual arts.

Special classes in painting and drawing have always been part of the educational endeavors since the group formed.  A “drop-in” portrait group will on Monday afternoons at the Sanibel Library during January, February, and March. Instructors for our workshops come from within the membership or invited nationally-known visiting teachers.

Membership
Active members, with their varied backgrounds and interests, have always been an integral component in keeping SCAL current in creative vision. Encouragement, friendliness and participation are a part of the Art League and have certainly contributed to its continuity and stability. The current membership of the Art League totals about 160 members. We are a 501(c)(3) organization.

Exhibitions
The first annual juried show was held in 1975 and exhibitions have continued to the present time.
