Red Sox Spring Training - Fort Myers - JetBlue Park

It’s that peak-tourism time of year when Red Sox fans visiting Sanibel Island ALSO get to head back across the bridge towards JetBlue Park at Fenway South in Fort Myers for the seasonally-appropriate excitement of Spring Training games.

It’s always a festive outing with music in the open air, the scent of ballpark food, ice cold beers, and PLENTY of official Boston Red Sox gear available at the team store; everything from jerseys, to coffee mugs, to collectibles (we had our eye on an autographed Bill “Spaceman” Lee baseball), to hats, and watches, and fidget spinners, and cufflinks — all the way through to plush dolls of team mascot Wally the Green Monster, and more!

About The Game:

On Friday, February 21st, 2020 the first unofficial game of Red Sox Spring Training took place with their annual exhibition opener against Northeastern University.

Fans arriving at the ballpark took photos with the World Series trophy and admired a life size Lego version of David Ortiz — all while braving rare chilly Florida temperatures in the high 60s.

Before the game started, the team held a moving tribute for Pete Frates, Nick Cafardo, and the family of Red Sox scout JJ Altobelli — whose father, stepmother and sister passed in the helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gigi.

The Red Sox won the 7 inning game (3-0) – as they have every year since the teams have first faced each other – a tradition that began in 1977 and has taken place annually since 2004.

The national anthem was performed by powerhouse vocalist Adanita Ross, who tours with C&C Music Factory singing hits like “Everybody Dance Now” and “Things That Make You Go Hmmm”. Recently DreamWorks Animation released the Netflix series “Mr. Peabody and Sherman Show” with a soundtrack which featured the single Ferris wheel with vocals by Ross.

As the national anthem ended, A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter participated in a fly over of JetBlue Park.
