For over 15 years, Sweet Melissa’s has been a beacon of flavor on Sanibel Island. Under the skilled guidance of Executive Chef Melissa Donahue, this establishment has garnered widespread acclaim for its innovative dishes, blending a variety of tastes, textures, and eclectic ingredients into an unforgettable dining experience.
Chef Melissa’s remarkable journey has taken her from the prestigious French Culinary Institute in Manhattan to the kitchens of renowned establishments such as Union Cafe in New York City, Commander’s Palace, and John Besh’s August in New Orleans. Her talent and passion have earned her accolades from top publications in Southwest Florida, as well as a spot on USA Today’s prestigious list of top 10 restaurants in South Florida in 2017. Additionally, she was recognized as a James Beard semi-finalist for Best Chef in the South in 2019.
Back on October 18th, 2022, after Hurricane Ian, Chef Melissa Donahue updated, “It has been a tough couple of weeks for everyone on Sanibel and southwest Florida that is for sure. As I am sure it is for everyone there are good days and bad ones and many many sad ones. I have spent that last 15 years of my life cooking food everyday on Sanibel and have been so blessed to have met so many amazing people on the way. Sweet Melissa’s was gutted by Ian, the entire contents of 15 years of work is in the parking lot. I want to thank everyone who has reached out and offered so much love and support. Now the rebuilding process will begin and we will be back on Sanibel better than ever!“
